RE: Portland Japanese Garden / Case Study

The Portland Japanese Garden has been one of the crown jewels of the Pacific Northwest for over 50 years. Its exquisite grounds are beloved by Portland locals and tourists alike—and it has been praised as the “most authentic Japanese garden outside of Japan.” At the start of our partnership, we were brought in to help the Marketing Director conquer the challenges of inconsistent branding. Various departments were producing their own marketing materials—without any thought given to a unified look and feel, messaging or voice.

WE RENEWED AND ELEVATED the Portland Japanese Garden brand with an refined voice, color palette, font and gorgeous imagery—transforming their dated website into an elegant digital experience that captivates the imagination of visitors to come and echoes the Garden’s universal beauty. We’ve carried this new branding in the Garden’s marketing collateral as well, helping promote special events, enticing visitors to explore exciting new exhibits and highlighting unique finds in their gift shop.

Without the resources of an in-house marketing team, the Portland Japanese Garden brought us in to help manage the Garden’s branding organization-wide—streamlining marketing materials to ensure quality control and brand consistency. Our strong partnership has continued and most recently, we carried out an extensive rebrand to better align the Garden’s brand with its sophisticated, world-class reputation.

The branding now reflects its stature as a major player in preserving and protecting the Japanese garden art form—as well as representing the serenity and harmony that one experiences upon visiting the Garden. As a result, visitor attendance is at an all-time high and the Garden now has a look and feel that they can feel proud of.
